Loleta Dawson Fyan papers, 1871-1990, bulk 1911-1961.

The Loleta Dawson Fyan Papers collection contains records that were both generated and collected by Loleta Fyan. This collection also includes the papers of some of Loleta's family members as well as those belonging to some of her personal friends and professional colleagues. These records consist mainly of diaries, correspondence, handwritten notes, publications, and photographs. Materials contained in this collection would be sufficient to help researchers interested in such topics as: 20th century Michigan female library and information science professionals; the history of the State Library of Michigan; 20th century Michigan female high school teachers and principals; prominent Wellesley College graduates; the history of the Wayne County Library System; World War I era history relevant to Michigan; and general genealogical information concerning the Fyan, Dawson and DeGroat families.

Loleta Irene Dawson Fyan was born on May 14, 1894, in Clinton, Iowa, to Albert Foster Dawson and Phoebe R. (DeGroat) Dawson. She received a B.A. from Wellesley College majoring in botany and minoring in music. She graduated top of her class from Western Reserve University's Library School in 1920 and was hired by the Detroit Public Library.
